Penair is a Secondary School which became an Academy Trust in April 2011. We are based in Truro, Cornwall and currently have more than 1,150 students aged between 11-16 years old.

Penair is an inclusive school, focused on ensuring that all our students make good progress and have the opportunity to pursue the subjects that interest them. Our purpose is to create a caring, learning community of high quality where everyone is valued for who they are and for what they may become.

Our promotion of British values

The government set out their definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. These were reinforced in Sept 2014. These new regulations sit alongside the requirements of the Equalities Act, which also applies to all types of school.

Schools are expected to focus on, and be able to show, how our work with students is effective in embedding fundamental British values.

Democracy

Pupil voice is significant in regards to life at Penair. Our vibrant and active school council plays a significant and influential role in our school. They are elected by their class peers and are involved in making our school a better place to learn. Students have a great amount of input in regards to what and how they learn, which promotes student voice. For example, students contribute to subject councils that feed back to teachers to inform the teacher’s planning.

Students also take part in voting for the annual prize day ceremony where they recognise the many achievements of their peers through our Moodle virtual learning environment. This helps them to understand their role in democracy both now and in the future.

The Rule of Law

Our students encounter rules and laws throughout their entire lives. Students are encouraged to understand that whether these laws govern the class, the school, the neighbourhood or the country, they are set for good reasons and must be adhered to.

The importance of rules is consistently reinforced through assemblies and our curriculum. The involvement of our students, staff, parents and governors in updating school rules helps students to understand the reasons behind the rules and the consequences if they are broken.

Individual Liberty

We place high value in creating a positive culture in our school, so that students are in a safe environment where choices and freedoms are encouraged. We actively promote a very wide range of extra-curricular clubs which students have the freedom to choose from, based on their interests. Through lessons on E-Safety, Citizenship, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and throughout the curriculum we educate students on their rights and personal freedoms as well as supporting them in recognising how to exercise these freedoms safely.

Mutual respect

Mutual respect is at the core of our school life. Students learn to treat each other and staff with respect. This is evident when walking around our school and in the classrooms.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We offer a culturally rich and diverse curriculum in which all major religions are studied and respected.  We strongly believe that tolerance is gained through knowledge and understanding. Through our curriculum and the routines of our daily school life, we strive to demonstrate tolerance and help our students to become knowledgeable and understanding citizens who can build a better Britain for the future.
